Description

This presentation will focus on the 2023 ASPEN guidelines for parenteral nutrition in the critically ill preterm infant. We will review how the authors systematically evaluated optimal protein dosing, lipid composition, and timing of initiation of parenteral nutrition for the preterm infant and describe outcomes and recommendations from this publication. This learning activity will supplement the clinicians’ knowledge of preterm infant nutrition and parenteral nutrition writing skills to optimize the nutrition care of preterm infants while receiving parenteral nutrition.

Learning Objectives

  1. Review the ASPEN recommendations for parenteral nutrition in preterm infants and evidence that led to these conclusions

  2. Address misconceptions in provision of omega-3 fatty acids for the prevention of cholestasis

  3. Identify areas of ambiguity in parenteral nutrition recommendations for preterm infants and future research needs
